Vol. 365 No. 7

Written Answers. - Killing of Foxes.

73.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry whether he retains records in relation to the number of foxes killed for use by the fur trade in this country; if such records are kept, the total numbers killed during the course of the last 12 month period for which he has such information; and the proportion of these which were (a) ranched; and (b) taken from the wild.

No records are kept by my Department of the number of foxes killed or the purposes for which they are killed. The export of fox pelts is prohibited save under licence granted by me in accordance with regulations made under the Wildlife Act, 1976. Approximately 61,000 fox pelts were exported under licence last year of which number approximately 19,000 came from farm reared animals.
