Vol. 365 No. 11

Written Answers. - EC Policy on South Africa.

13.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs when the Council of Ministers of the EC will next discuss policy towards South Africa; and if he will make a statement on what his input would be in such discussions.

The tragic and continuing violence in South Africa is a source of deep concern to the member states of the European Community. It is to be expected, therefore, that South Africa will be a subject for discussion whenever the Twelve Foreign Ministers meet in European Political Co-operation. The most recent such meeting took place in Luxembourg on 21 April last.

During discussions on South Africa I stated Ireland's position on the question of apartheid generally and on specific topics scheduled for discussion. The aim of these discussions is to arrive at a consensus among the Twelve on policy towards South Africa and my contribution would be directed towards seeing that the consensus position is as close to Ireland's national stance as possible. I also keep our partners informed about any changes in Ireland's national policy towards South Africa, such as the measures announced by the Government on 26 March in relation to imports of fruit and vegetables from South Africa.

The next ministerial meeting in European Political Co-operation will be an informal meeting on 7 and 8 June.
