Vol. 365 No. 11

Written Answers. - Kerry Road Improvement.

33.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a special grant available to Kerry County Council to improve the road from Caragh Bridge to Cromane and on to the junction with the Killorglin-Caherciveen Road; if he will arrange to have this road upgraded to a regional road status; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the road in question is a county road, primary responsibility for the planning and execution of any improvement works on it, including the timing and provision of the necessary finance, rests with Kerry County Council. The local authority may, at their discretion, use the block grant for roads to supplement expenditure from their own resources for such works. In the current year, a block grant of £662,000 has been notified to the local authority. This represents an increase of 16 per cent on the corresponding grant in 1985. This road does not warrant designation as a regional road, having regard to the criteria used for such designation.
