asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state in respect of each Minister of State in his Department, for the last year for which figures are available: the number of civilian drivers employed; the total cost of salaries paid to the drivers; the total cost of expenses paid to the drivers; and the total mileage allowance paid to the Ministers of State in respect of the use of their own car.

Following is the information requested:

Mr. Paul Connaughton

Mr. Paddy Hegarty

£19,905

†Total cost of drivers' expenses

£6,000

†Total mileage allowance paid to Minister of State

£18,701

*For year ended 5 April 1986

†Amounts paid in last mileage year, which differs for each driver

If Minister of State had been provided with official cars and drivers in 1985, the estimated cost would have been £84,000 per user on average.

Therefore the total saving due to the employment of civilian drivers amounts to £79,766 in 1985.
