Vol. 366 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sarsfield Barracks (Limerick) Meat Complaint.

67.

asked the Minister for Defence, if he is aware, of complaints from Army personnel arising from the sale of diseased meat for human consumption by staff of the 12th Battalion, Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick, that this meat was sold under public contract, if he will ensure that all meat sold by contract to Army personnel will be subject to the same standards of veterinary inspection as the meat supplied to hospitals and other institutions under his jurisdiction, if he will investigate this matter and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of any complaints from military personnel relating to the consumption of meat supplied under contract to Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick. Only meat which is in accordance with a stringent specification is acceptable against contracts for the supply of meat to the Defence Forces. Separate contracts are not placed for the supply of meat to military hospitals. I might mention that two carcases of beef delivered to Sarsfield Barracks last month were rejected following veterinary advice.
