Vol. 366 No. 4

Written Answers. - Expenditure on Public Services.

85.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give a breakdown of how each pound paid in direct taxation is spent on public services.

In 1986, gross current expenditure is estimated at £9,473 million (post-budget estimate). The percentage distribution of this total is as follows:

%

Service of public debt

21.3

Economic services (agriculture, industry, etc.)

8.2

Infrastructure (road maintenance, etc.)

1.1

Social Welfare

26.7

Health

11.9

Education

10.6

Other social services

5.1

Security (Garda, Army, etc.)

6.9

Other expenditure (EC budget contribution, etc.)

8.2

Total

100%

This gross current expenditure will be financed from a number of sources — tax revenue, non-tax revenue, departmental receipts, PRSI contributions and borrowing. Of these sources, tax revenue is expected to yield £6,117 million (i.e. 64.6 per cent).
