Vol. 366 No. 4

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

116.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the present position in regard to an unemployment assistance appeal of a person (details supplied) in County Laois.

Entitlement to unemployment assistance is subject to the condition that a claimant must be available for and genuinely seeking work. The unemployment assistance claim of the person concerned was disallowed by a deciding officer on the grounds that he did not satisfy that condition.

He appealed against the decision to disallow his claim and his case was listed for oral hearing on 22 April 1986. However, he notified the Department that he would be unable to attend the hearing on that date.

His case has now been relisted for oral hearing on 15 May 1986. His entitlement to unemployment assistance will be reviewed in the light of the outcome of the appeal.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a decision will be made on the unemployment assistance claim of a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny where the social welfare officer has forwarded a report.

The person concerned claimed unemployment assistance in February 1986 and in connection with his claim a social welfare officer visited him recently to investigate his means.

In conjunction with the investigation of means the claimant was requested to provide a statement from his accountant giving details about a business enterprise in which he had been involved. When this statement is furnished his case will be submitted to a deciding officer for assessment of his means and his entitlement to unemployment assistance will be determined. It is understood that the person concerned is, at present, in receipt of supplementary welfare allowance from the health board.
