Vol. 366 No. 9

Written Answers. - Land Policy.

31.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will indicate: (a) the amount of land which changed hands in 1985; (b) the percentage of this land purchased by farmers; (c) if there are adequate safeguards to ensure that lands are not purchased by persons with no interest and no knowledge of farming; and (d) if he is satisfied that the advantage of the weak position of farmers in recent years is not being availed of by persons at (c) above.

Details of the amount of land which changes hands annually or the percentage of such land which is purchased by farmers are not available. Various surveys indicate that about 50 per cent of land coming on the open market is purchased by full time farmers.

I expect to be in a position to indicate the general direction of future land policy, including the question of some form of control of the purchase of land coming on the open market, when introducing the proposed legislation to abolish the Land Commission.
