Vol. 366 No. 9

Written Answers. - Child Care Diploma Course.

118.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received any proposals from the authorities of an educational institution (details supplied) in County Galway, regarding the provision of a two-year course in general social studies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

119.

asked the Minister whether the diploma course in child care which has been operational for the past three years at Galway Regional Technical College is to be continued after June this year; and if he feels that it would be desirable that the course would be continued after June this year.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 118 and 119 together.

I have not received a proposal for the establishment of a two-year course in general social studies in the college in question.

I understand that City of Galway Vocational Education Committee propose to continue the diploma course in child care at Galway Regional Technical College after June this year.

I should explain that responsibility for the establishment and continuation of courses in these colleges is a matter in the first instance for the vocational education committee and for the relevant validating body, the National Council for Educational Awards.
