Vol. 367 No. 10

Written Answers. - Tourism Promotion.

29.

asked the Minister for Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry if, in view of the number of cancellations reaching Irish hotels from the American tourist market, he will strengthen the campaign in Britain to attract the British customer to spend a holiday in Ireland this year; the action, if any, he intends taking in the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am happy to say that as part of the campaign to offset the downturn in US traffic this year Bord Fáilte recently allocated an additional £100,000 towards increased promotional activity in the British market. These funds are being used on extra promotion and on advertising a range of competitively priced package holidays in co-operation with the carriers and tour operators. In addition all Bord Fáilte offices in Britain and Europe have been contacting tour operators and handling agents suggesting Ireland as a viable alternative for Americans cancelling proposed tours to Europe and Britain.
