Vol. 367 No. 10

Written Answers. - Cost of Alcoholism to Industry.

66.

asked the Minister for Labour the estimated economic cost in terms of lost production due to alcohol abuse per annum.

While a number of small scale studies of the cost of alcoholism to industry have been made in conjunction with particular treatment programmes, it is difficult to arrive at any reliable estimate of the economic cost of lost output to industry as a whole. There is the further problem that alcohol abuse may be the root cause of many medical conditions which may also give rise to absenteeism. In addition the abuse of alcohol may contribute to lost production by employees at work through bad decision-making and/or low productivity.
