asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the reasons the Government has not yet brought into force the convention on the transfer of sentenced persons; and when it is intended to do so.

Ireland signed the Council of Europe Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Prisoners on 20 August 1986. It has also been signed by the following: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US. To date only Canada, Cyprus, France, Sweden, the UK and the US have ratified the convention.

The question of ratification of the Convention, including any legislative and administrative arrangements necessary, is under consideration.
