Vol. 369 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Career Breaks.

13.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of members of An Garda Síochana, of the various grades, who have availed of a career break since the agreement for such has come into being.

A scheme for the introduction of career breaks for members of the Garda Síochána up to and including the rank of inspector has recently been agreed at the Garda Conciliation Council and will come into effect shortly. Pending completion of the formalities relating to the introduction of the scheme, an interim arrangement is in operation whereby members whose applications for career breaks are approved by the commissioner are being granted special leave without pay. I am informed by the Garda authorities that to date 74 gardaí have been granted this special leave.

Is the Minister satisfied the scheme will be beneficial to the force in the long term or is it likely that in many cases it will be a prelude to a member leaving the force?

I am satisfied that in the long term the scheme will be beneficial to the force, just as it will be beneficial in the context of the wider civil and public service to which it applies.

Is there a limit to the number who will be allowed to go on a career break?

Does the Minister know the number of ban-ghardaí and gardaí who avail of career breaks? Is a pattern emerging?

I must say, whether with pride or embarrassment, that I do not know but since we treat all gardaí equally, we have not distinguished between gardaí and ban-ghardaí. The total number is 74. I will make further inquiries to establish the breakdown between gardaí and banghardaí and I will send the information to the Deputy.

I must now take up the questions listed as priority.
