Written Answers. - Christmas Bonus.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if she intends to grant a Christmas bonus to social welfare recipients; and if so the categories which will be granted the additional payment.

The Government has made available an additional £18 million for the payment of a Christmas bonus to welfare recipients this year. The bonus will be paid during the week ending 5 December to the following people:

Old age pensioners; widows and orphans pensioners; retirement pensioners; invalidity pensioners; blind pensioners; recipients of: deserted wife's benefit and allowance, single women's allowance, unmarried mother's allowance, prisoner's wife's allowance, disabled pension, unemployment assistance at the long-term rate; long-term health payments: disabled person's maintenance allowance, infectious diseases maintenance allowance, blind welfare allowance, domiciliary care allowance for handicapped children

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the funds allocated to the combat poverty group for 1986 which have still not been spent; and if a decision can be speedily reached with regard to the grant applications from two inner city groups (details supplied).

Of the £1 million allocated for the Anti-Poverty Programme in 1986 there are existing commitments in respect of around £300,000, mainly in connection with the EC Poverty Programme. In addition, the Combat Poverty Agency made proposals for payments to a number of organisations who have applied to the agency for funding this year. These proposals are at present under consideration and decisions will be made as soon as possible.
