asked the Minister for Justice the numbers and grades of all members of (a) the Garda Síochána; (b) the prison service; and (c) all officials of his Department who have (1) applied for and (2) been granted career breaks since the introduction of the scheme for all public servants in 1984.
Written Answers. - Career Breaks.
I am informed by the Garda authorities that, under the arrangements for career breaks applying to the Force, 80 members — all of Garda rank — have applied for, and 74 have been granted, special leave.
The position regarding other staff under my Department is that a total of 234 applied for career breaks and all were granted with the exception of one in the probation and welfare service, whose application is deferred pending completion of probation. It is a condition of the scheme that probation must be completed before a career break can be allowed. Details of applications are as follows:
