Vol. 370 No. 2

Written Answers. - Additional Aid for National Schools.

182.

asked the Minister for Education in view of the fact that a number of schools have been permitted to retain teachers, who would otherwise be on the panel, on the grounds that these schools are in underprivileged areas, if there is a national policy on this matter; and how underprivileged areas are defined in the circumstances.

In accordance with Government policy to provide additional aid to national schools serving disadvantaged areas, as set out in the Programme for Action, my Department operates a scheme of providing additional teaching assistance to such schools.

In establishing an order of merit for the limited number of posts available under the scheme each year, the principal factors taken into account are the disadvantaged nature of the area served by each school, the level of staffing and the number of pupils in the school. Reports from the inspectorate in each of the applicant schools are carefully considered before the final allocation is decided.
