Vol. 370 No. 2

Written Answers. - Behavioural Problems in Primary Schools.

184.

asked the Minister for Education the percentage of children with behavioural problems in primary schools; and the steps he is taking to help such children.

Children with behavioural or emotional problems may be assisted by special schemes of remedial teaching, or in serious cases, by referral to one of the special schools for children with behavioural or emotional disabilities. Seriously disturbed children may be referred to one of the Child and Family Guidance Services which are funded by the Department of Health.

In regard to the general issue of discipline in schools, I indicated in reply to Deputy Mary O'Rourke on 20 November that I hoped to be in a position before the end of the present term to announce my response to the recommendations in the Report of the Committee on School Discipline.
