Vol. 370 No. 3

Written Answers. - Wind Power Development.

16.

asked the Minister for Energy if his Department has carried out an up-to-date examination of the possible harnessing of: (a) wind and (b) tidal power for commercial and domestic use; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

28.

asked the Minister for Energy the steps that have been taken to develop windpower; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 16 and 28 together. Since 1980 my Department has been operating a wind power demonstration programme. Since 1984 the programme has been partly funded by the EC. The objective is to assess the potential of this source of energy in Irish conditions. The EC programme involves five wind turbine generators located around the country. These machines cover a range of sizes and have a variety of uses. I am currently having results of the programme assessed. When this has been done I will consider what further measures might be appropriate.

With regard to tidal power, I have been advised by the ESB that only one site with some potential has been identified. However, the tidal characteristics are such that the site is not suitable for economic development. The ESB have indicated that the feasibility of development will be kept under review in light of the changing economic circumstances and technological progress.
