Vol. 370 No. 3

Written Answers. - Removal of Ivy at Trim.

69.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason Trim Urban District Council have not received any acknowledgement to their letters dated 20 January 1986, 13 February 1986, 19 May 1986, 19 September 1986 and 17 October 1986 to the Office of Public Works regarding the removal of ivy from the old jail wall at the rear of the Garda barracks at Trim, County Meath; and if he will make a statement on the matter as to when this work will be carried out.

The Commissioners of Public Works can trace only two of the letters referred to by the Deputy, those dated 13 February 1986, and 17 October 1986.

Following receipt of letter dated 13 February 1986, arrangements were made to have the roots of the ivy cut away and this was done in May 1986. The Commissioners regret that this letter was not answered at this stage and have taken steps to ensure this will not recur.

To avoid causing unnecessary damage to the wall it was decided to allow the remainder of the ivy plant to decay before attempting to remove it. An order to remove the remaining ivy was issued on a contractor in October 1986, and the work is expected to be done shortly.

It was and is the Commissioners intention to reply to the urban council's letter of 17 October 1986 once the work is completed.
