Vol. 370 No. 13

Written Answers. - Joint Committee on Crime, Lawlessness and Vandalism.

171.

asked the Minister for Finance the action he has taken or proposes to take to implement the recommendations of the Second Report of the Joint Committee on Crime, Lawlessness and Vandalism, which was considered by the Dáil on 15 November 1984, with regard to the treatment by officers of customs and excise of persons entering the State who are suspected of having hidden or swallowed prohibited drugs into their bodies.

Legislation is in the course of preparation to extend to officers of Customs and Excise the powers which members of the Garda Síochána have under section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Acts 1977 and 1984 in relation to the detention and search of persons entering the State who are suspected of unlawfully importing a controlled drug.
