Vol. 371 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Apartheid in South Africa.

11.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Government propose to continue the policy of opposition to apartheid in South Africa; if he will ensure that Ireland will continue to ban the importation of fruit and vegetables from South Africa; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government will continue the policy of successive Governments in opposing apartheid in South Africa and working for its speedy and peaceful abolition. The Government have no plans to alter the measures imposed by the previous Government with regard to imports of South African fruit and vegetables, a measure which commanded wide support from all quarters of the House.

I welcome the Minister's unequivocal statement and, as far as my party are concerned, I should like to assure him of our continued co-operation in this area of foreign policy. Does the Minister not agree that it would be of benefit to have a committee dealing with foreign affairs policies to reinforce his stand when we arrive at a consensus? Will the Minister agree that his reply is an indication of the strength he can draw from such a committee if it is productive? Will the Minister propose to the Whip of his party the establishment of such a committee?

Members are indulging in repetition.

We can have constructive and responsible discussions on that matter.
