Vol. 371 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dublin School.

185.

asked the Minister for Education if the security fencing promised for the perimeter wall of a school (details supplied) in Dublin I will be urgently provided before any further damage is caused; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

186.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware that the interior walls of classrooms in a school (details supplied) in Dublin 1, have not been painted in 11 years, that teachers are forced to wash the walls themselves as cleaning staff do not have the time or materials; and if she will immediately remedy this situation.

187.

asked the Minister for Education the measures being taken to improve the conditions at a school (details supplied) in Dublin 1; and if so, what is being considered; and when it will be implemented.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 185 to 187, inclusive, together.

The Office of Public Works are responsible for the maintenance of the Central Model School, Marlborough Street, Dublin 1 which was the subject of recent discussions between representatives of the school, officers of my Department and officers of the Office of Public Works.

The Office of Public Works recently placed contracts for the provision of security fencing on the site boundaries and for the laying of a tarmac play area. It is understood that these works will commence at an early date.

In the course of the discussions referred to, requests for the following works were put forward by the schools; provision of sinks in the classrooms, improvements to the boys' toilets, painting of classrooms internally, replacement of floor tiling, improvements to the surface-water drainage system, and various additional security measures. The Office of Public Works have undertaken as a matter of urgency to carry out a feasibility study and cost estimate in that connection, and I understand these will be made available at an early date, when my Department will communicate further with the schools. The Deputies may be assured that my Department will be urging the Office of Public Works to put all necessary works in hands with the minimum of delay.
