Vol. 371 No. 6

Written Answers. - EC Financial Assistance.

13.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he plans to press for special financial assistance in Brussels for Ireland from the EC to compensate for the Common Agricultural Policy restrictions that have adversely penalised Irish farming which is far below its natural state of development.

I am aware of the severe impact of the decisions taken in the milk and beef sectors in the December and March Councils. I share the Deputy's concern that these decisions could adversely militate against the Irish farming sector in reaching its full potential. While the Council decisions cannot, at this stage, be altered, I am taking every practicable opportunity to press, at Community level, for improvements in the CAP that would benefit the Irish farm sector, including improvements which would offset some of the adverse consequences of the restrictions decided on at the Council in December and March.
