The distribution of staffing numbers and grades of the Department is to be found in the State Directory published by the former Department of the Public Service. This shows the staff in all the various areas both those devoted exclusively to particular schemes and those involved in activities which relate to the whole Department such as Accounts, Personnel, Organisation (including computer development), Inspection Branch, Appeals, Medical Referees. It is not possible to allocate the numbers in these general areas to particular schemes.
Staff numbers and grades for the various sections devoted exclusively to the schemes mentioned in the question are shown in the following table. Staff in the Department's local offices administer both unemployment benefit and unemployment assistance together and for this reason it is not possible to give a breakdown of the staff numbers between the schemes. Retirement pension is included with old age pensions.
