asked the Minister for the Environment if he will order the installation of a taxi rank in Sligo in accordance with a submission from Sligo Corporation; and if so, when the order will be made.
Written Answers. - Sligo Taxi Rank.
Small public service vehicles at present operating in Sligo town may only be licensed by the Garda Commissioner under the Road Traffic Acts as private hire vehicles, that is hackeneys.
In response to an application made by Sligo Corporation and by a number of other local authorities, regulations are currently being drafted by my Department which would enable the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána to grant public hire licences, subject to the number of licences in an area being determined by the local authority. The regulations will be made as soon as possible.
In addition to the regulations, by-laws or temporary rules must be made by the Garda Commissioner with my consent in order to designate "appointed stands" that is ranks at which public hire vehicles may stand for hire.
