Vol. 371 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Kildare Schools.

68.

asked the Minister for Education the present position with regard to the acquisition and provision of a site for a post-primary college at Confey, Leixlip, County Kildare; if she will confirm that the site has been purchased; whether it is proposed to provide temporary accommodation on site in time for the next school year; whether planning permission is necessary or has been approved in this case; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Terms were recently agreed for the purchase of a site for the new community college at Confey, Leixlip, County Kildare, and the legal formalities are currently being processed. My Department in conjunction with Kildare Vocational Education Committee will make the necessary arrangements to ensure that all pupils from Leixlip will be accommodated in September 1987. A proposal to provide temporary accommodation on the new site for the community college is being actively pursued with a view to having that accommodation ready for September 1987. The question regarding planning permission for the school is the subject of ongoing consultation with Kildare County Council.

asked the Minister for Education whether she proposes to intervene in the matter of the extra accommodation required at Coláiste Chiaráin, Leixlip, County Kildare; whether she has received submissions from parents in the catchment area of this school and if so, if she proposes to act on these submissions; if she will outline how the needs of the children in the catchment area of Coláiste Chiarain can best be met; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I have been made aware, through representations, of the situation in Leixlip whereby a number of parents who wished to enrol their children for September 1987 at Coláiste Chiaráin Community School have been unable to do so. There are, however, two post-primary schools in Leixlip — Coláiste Chiaráin and Confey Community College. My Department's primary concern in an area such as Leixlip, where it is necessary to provide more than one school, is to ensure that there are sufficient places for all pupils seeking post-primary education in the area. It is anticipated that the two schools, between them, will have sufficient accommodation to cater for all pupils from the Leixlip area seeking post-primary school places next September.

Intake policy generally is a matter for the board of management or managers of individual schools. My Department would expect, however, that, in an area like Leixlip where there are two schools, the boards of management would between them arrange a suitable intake policy to ensure that all pupils in the area had reasonably convenient access to one or other of the two schools.
