asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has examined the recent reports of the NESC and ESRI in relation to industrial designation for higher rates of grant aid from the IDA; and the proposals, if any, he has to alter the existing designations.

A detailed review of the criteria for designation was carried out by the National Economic and Social Council. The Economic and Social Research Institute were subsequently commissioned to advise on what changes would be appropriate in relation to designation, employing the criteria specified in the NESC report. The results of the ESRI study are currently being examined in my Department. No decision regarding changes in the designation of areas will be taken before this examination is completed and the matter is considered by Government.
In these circumstances it would not be appropriate for me to comment on the question of altering existing designations.
