Vol. 372 No. 1

Written Answers. - System Building of National Schools.

614.

asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the advantages of system building of national schools; and the extent of the economies she expects from its introduction.

The principal advantages sought from the use of system building in national schools are: cost efficiency, speed of erection, relative ease of maintenance over a period of at least 15 years and fixed-price contracts. It is expected that cost savings of at least 35 per cent can be achieved as compared with traditional building methods in situations where it may be appropriate to use system building. As the number of projects in which system building has been used in major national school schemes has been relatively few and as it would not be the intention to use the system building approach in all projects being grant aided by my Department, I am not in a position to quantify expected overall economies by reference to the annual cost of the national schools building programme.
