A sum of £150,000 was allocated to Vocational Education Committees in 1985 for the provision of community and literacy education free of charge or at nominal cost. In addition, in the same year grants-in-aid totalling £214,500 were allocated by my Department to a number of voluntary bodies concerned with adult education.
