The Civil Service is the only significant part of the public service for which I have direct responsibility. The number of staff recruited to the Civil Service for the past five years is as follows: 1982 (estimate)* 1,497; 1983 (estimate)* 1,140; 1984, 617; 1985, 1,375; 1986, 1,539.
* The figures for 1982 and 1983 have been adjusted to exclude recruitment to the areas of Department of Posts and Telegraphs from which An Post and Telecom Eireann were formed on 1 January 1984.
