Vol. 372 No. 8

Written Answers. - Death of Priest.

18.

asked the Minister for Justice if he intends to establish any inquiry, to allay public anxiety and concern surrounding the death of Father Niall Molloy; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As indicated by my predecessor in reply to Question No. 195 on 9 December 1986 this case has been the subject of a Garda investigation, a criminal trial and a coroner's inquest, which is, in effect, a sworn public inquiry. The State took every possible step, including the appointment of senior and junior counsel, to ensure that all of the relevant facts emerged at the inquest. The holding of any further inquiry could be justified only if there were some likelihood that some new facts of significance would be brought to light. As there does not appear to be any such likelihood in this case I do not see how any further inquiry could be justified.
