The Government believes that with proper organisation and direction a situation can be brought about where horticulture can supply a large proportion of the home market. The decision to set up An Bord Glas is intended to help in the achievement of that objective.
My Department is at present preparing legislation in relation to An Bord Glas and this will provide for the transfer to that body of personnel in ACOT and An Foras Talúntais with responsibilities in the horticultural area. Obviously the staff of An Foras Talúntais as the major agricultural research body in this sector will have a key role to play in the work of the board. Pending the establishment of a statutory authority an interim Board Glas has been set up as a transitional arrangement.
