asked the Minister for the Environment the number of private motor cars for which motor insurance was provided in respect of each of the last three years.
Written Answers - Motor Insurance.
Statistics are not available in the form requested by the Deputy. However, the number of motor vehicles licensed at any time is an approximate indication of the number of vehicles covered by motor insurance policies.
When a motor vehicle is being registered for the first time or relicensed, an insurance certificate covering the use of the vehicle in a public place must be produced to the motor tax office. The following are statistics of the number of private motor cars licensed at 30 September for the past three years:—
Year |
Number of Private Motor Cars Licensed (Taxed) |
1985 |
710,000 |
1986 |
711,000 |
1987 (provisional) |
734,000 |
The above figures do not include vehicles which may be insured but not licensed (including vehicles in the possession of the motor trade) or insurance policies cancelled subsequent to the first registration or relicensing of a vehicle.
