Vol. 376 No. 1

Written Answers - Social Employment Scheme.

175.

asked the Minister for Labour the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork who is working under the social employment scheme, who was previously entitled to an adult dependant allowance, is not now allowed the higher rate of payment, despite the fact that he has three children all attending school.

From April 1987 £60 per week is the normal weekly wage payable to participants in the social employment scheme. An additional allowance of £25 per week is payable to persons who are certified by the manager/deputy manager of the local employment exchange as receiving an allowance in respect of a dependent adult as part of their social welfare payment immediately prior to their recruitment to the scheme. The participant in question did not fulfil this requirement when he started on the project on 24 August, 1987. I understand from the Department of Social Welfare that persons on the social employment scheme do not qualify for the family income supplement.
