Vol. 376 No. 1

Written Answers - Smoking in Public Places.

36.

asked the Minister for Health if it is the Government's intention to ban smoking.

37.

asked the Minister for Health his Department's policy in regard to smoking in general and smoking in public places in particular; and the names of persons to comprise the advisory council on health promotions.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 36 and 37 together.

It is not the Government's policy or intention to ban smoking. It is, however, Government policy to reduce the prevalence of all health damaging behaviour, including smoking, and to promote a healthy lifestyle and an environment conducive to health.

In this context, draft legislation is being prepared which would give the Minister for Health power to restrict, by regulations, smoking in certain public places.

I have asked Professor Ivor Drury to act as Chairman of the Advisory Council on Health Promotion and he has agreed. I will announce the names of the other members shortly.
