Vol. 376 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Controlled Explosion Damage to Property.

11.

asked the Minister for Defence the arrangements which exist for compensating persons whose property may be damaged by controlled explosions set off by the Army while it is carrying out bomb disposal activities or dealing with suspect devices; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

(Limerick West): Claims for compensation for damage to property arising from controlled explosions carried out by the Defence Forces are settled by my Department on an ex gratia basis where the suspect object does not contain an explosive device.

Is the Minister aware that following an incident involving a car parked close to Henry Street on 20 April 1985, which case was reported in the media on 26 November 1987, the owner was obliged to bring court proceedings? Can he tell us whether an ex gratia application was made in that instance?

The Deputy is becoming very specific.

(Limerick West): I do not have that information but it is not usual to disclose that kind of information in the House.
