Approximately 6,000 recipients of unmarried mother's allowance had their claims reviewed in the period from 1 July 1986 to 30 June 1987.
Those reviewed can arise for a number of reasons, either at the request of the claimant or as part of the Department's ongoing control of claims. Of the reviews referred to 1,150 resulted in the allowance being terminated, 715 had an increase in allowance awarded for an additional child and 438 revised decisions were made arising from a change in the claimant's means. In the approximately 3,700 remaining claims no change was made as a result of the review.
