Vol. 376 No. 11

Written Answers. - Children's Needs.

96.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of all research projects in relation to the needs of children which are receiving financial assistance from the health services.

The Health Research Board, the statutory function of which is to promote, assist, commission and conduct medical or health related research are currently undertaking the following projects which specifically relate to the needs of children:

(i) Travellers' Health Status Study;

(ii) Mothers alone — a study of women who gave birth outside marriage in 1983;

(iii) European Economic Community Study on concerted action project on registration of congenital malformations;

(iv) Monitoring of sudden infant deaths in the Dublin region;

(v) Irish Collaborative Infancy Study (being funded directly by my Department).

(vi) EEC Study on Paediatric AIDS.

A number of other projects of the board while not specifically addressing the needs of children would have a bearing on the improvement on the health status of the community generally. Details of other relevant research projects carried out by health boards or other health agencies are not collected on a routine basis by my Department.
