Vol. 376 No. 11

Written Answers. - Naul (County Dublin) School.

105.

asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of her earlier reply stating that she was not prepared to allocate money for the building of a replacement school at Naul, County Dublin, during 1988, she would be prepared to fund renovation work on the existing 153 year old school building which is in urgent need of maintenance and repair and without adequate sanitary facilities.

As I am not in a position to allocate moneys in 1988 for the building of a replacement national school at Naul, County Dublin, I have agreed by way of short-term relief for the school to grant aid the provision of a prefabricated classroom in which will be installed three sanitary units. My Department's grant letter is about to issue to the school authorities.

Maintenance and repair as such are the responsibility of the school's board of management. I have, however, under consideration a report from my Department's professional advisers drawing attention to the unsatisfactory condition of certain features of the existing building, among which are the original toilets and the windows. I will be prepared to sanction any further necessary grants for improvements as soon as the full extent of the work required has been assessed.
