Vol. 377 No. 1

Written Answers. - Glencolumbkille (Donegal) Garda Station.

114.

asked the Minister for Justice in relation to Glencolumbkille Garda station, County Donegal, the reason the telephone extension from the Garda station to the attached living accommodation occupied by the local Garda sergeant has been disconnected; if, in view of the fact that as a result of the disconnection, the Garda station can now receive telephone calls only between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., in the particularly isolated rural community served by the station, he will arrange to have the extension reconnected; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The decision to remove the telephone extensions from the official Garda living accommodation has been taken by the Garda authorities as part of the process of providing the Force with an improved and more cost effective telephone system in conjunction with the provision of the Garda national communications system. The reasons for this decision and the facilities which are available to the public to enable them to contact the Garda, were outlined by me in reply to a parliamentary question on 28 October 1987. In view of the circumstances outlined it is not proposed to reverse the decision affecting telephone extensions.
