Vol. 377 No. 1

Written Answers. - Food Labelling Regulations.

159.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the present status of amendments to the food labelling regulations promised by him in June 1987.

In replying to a parliamentary question in June last I indicated that I proposed to amend the food labelling regulations so as to require: that the specific name or E number of additives be given in addition to their category name, and that beverages containing greater than 1.2 per cent of alcohol be labelled with their alcoholic strength.

In the case of the additives, I made the relevant amending regulations on 31 July last and these will come into operation on 1 July 1988.

My Department is currently examining the measures necessary to implement the requirement in relation to the indication of alcoholic strength — this requirement is contained in an EC directive and is to be implemented by May 1989.
