Vol. 377 No. 1

Written Answers. - Price Display Order.

177.

Mr. J. Bruton

andMr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 35 of 18 November 1987 and his extreme disappointment at the level of compliance by petrol retailers with the price display order, he will convene a meeting with the body of bodies representing these retailers to discuss the matter; and if he will indicate the nature and timing of any further action he is taking to rectify the situation.

The Restrictive Practices (Amendment) Act, 1987, which became effective on 25 January 1988 gives the Director of Consumer Affairs and Fair Trade an expanded role in the surveillance and enforcement of a range of consumer-related legislation, including the Petrol Prices Display Order.

The director, in consultation with my Department, is currently engaged in making the necessary arrangements for the exercise of his new functions and I am confident that the new arrangements when fully in place will contribute substantially to the level of compliance with, and enforcement of, the order to which the Deputies refer.
