Vol. 377 No. 1

Written Answers. - Naval Service Divers.

286.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will confirm that serving members of the Naval Service were employed by the diving contractor as commercial divers on the Kowloon Bridge contract; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that naval divers are regularly employed by a Cork based diving contractor, while properly qualified commercial divers are unemployed; and if he will take the necessary steps to have this practice ended.

Limerick West): Two Naval Service divers were employed by a civilian contractor on the Kowloon Bridge. They were called in at short notice, to remove toxic substances from the wreck, when two civilian divers became unavailable due to illness.

Naval Service divers have on occasions worked for civilian diving companies. In most cases, they have undertaken the work at short notice when civilian divers were not available or would not accept the particular job. Such work is undertaken by Naval Service personnel only during off-duty hours or while on annual leave. At no time did these activities interfere with the performance of their official duties.
