Vol. 377 No. 1

Written Answers. - Louth National School.

288.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the very serious situation which exists at the Rampart national school, Jenkinstown, Dundalk, County Louth; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that permission was given to go to tender for an extension to this school and that this school has been condemned by the medical officer as the roof is leaking and the windows are in a very serious condition; if she will allow the project to proceed in view of the fact that the parents committee have collected £25,000 by voluntary means; the total cost of the project; when the building can commence; when it is expected to be completed; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I accept that Rampart national school, Jenkinstown, Dundalk, County Louth, has an acute accommodation problem. Proposals had been drawn up and tenders received for the erection of four new classrooms and the adaptation of existing accommodation for ancillary purposes, but my Department have not been in a position to approve the placing of a contract because of the current constraints of their capital programme.

Discussions are taking place with the school authorities on the question of grant-aiding the provision of essential classroom accommodation. These discussions have not yet been concluded. I am making arrangements to have the Deputy advised of developments in this matter in due course.
