Vol. 377 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tallaght (Dublin) Schools.

321.

asked the Minister for Education if she has made a decision to amalgamate the Brookfield community school with Jobstown community college, Tallaght, Dublin 24.

322.

asked the Minister for Education if, given the high level of unemployment in Jobstown, Dublin 24 and the need to assist in the development of this community, she will as a matter of urgency sanction the building of a school premises for Jobstown community college, Tallaght, Dublin 24.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 321 and 322 together.

I appreciate, and sympathise with, the many difficulties being experienced by the people living in Jobstown. However, my prime function is to provide adequately for the educational needs of the area at all levels in the most economical way.

The original decision to provide a community college in Jobstown was taken on the basis of all available information in relation to population growth, house building programmes etc. However, a variety of factors have combined to alter the picture, with the result that the demand for post primary pupil accommodation will in the future be significantly less than was originally anticipated. Consequently the building of Jobstown community college, which would result in an excess of accommodation in the area, will not now be going ahead.

No decision has been taken to amalgamate Brookfield community school and Jobstown community college.
