Vol. 377 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dublin Unemployment Statistics.

51.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the unparalleled unemployment statistics in north inner city Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the Government's plans for remedial action specifically geared to this region, in this respect.

I am aware of the unemployment situation in north inner city Dublin.

The body responsible for industrial development in the area, the Industrial Development Authority, have assured me that they are actively promoting the area for suitable industrial projects. The development of the area has been enhanced by the provision of Enterprise Centres by the IDA in Gardiner Street and East Wall Road and a small industry cluster unit in Prussia Street. A total of 240 people are employed in East Wall Road. In Gardiner Street a further 20 people are employed. In Prussia Street a total of 61 people are employed. Also the IDA have allocated an 8,500 sq. ft. premises on the North Wall Quay to a local community group. At present one local group are involved in a project employing 8 people.

A major positive development in the area is the International Financial Services Centre in the Customs House Dock site. It is expected that during the construction phase of the centre a total of 2,000 construction jobs will be created.

I have been assured that the IDA will continue to actively promote the north inner city Dublin area and, in particular, the facilities available for industrial activity.
