Vol. 377 No. 5

Written Answers. - International Convention on Discrimination.

15.

asked the Minister for Labour the status of Ireland in respect of the International Convention on Discrimination in respect of Employment and Occupation; and if Ireland is under any obligation as a consequence of this convention.

Ireland has not ratified ILO Convention No. 111 concerning discrimination in respect of employment and occupation. This country is not, therefore, under any obligation arising from the convention.

The provisions of the Anti-Discrimination (Pay) Act, 1974, the Employment Equality Act, 1977, and the national legislation to give effect to the EC Equal Treatment Directive, satisfy almost all the requirements of the ILO Convention in question. However, the absence of specific national legislation outlawing discrimination on grounds of race, colour, religion, political opinion, national extraction and social origin, which are mentioned in the Convention precludes ratification by this country.
