Vol. 377 No. 8

Written Answers. - Aid for Emigrants.

31.

asked the Minister for Education if she will indicate the nature of the services provided by her Department in relation to the provision of information or financial assistance for intending emigrants; and the specific responsibilities the Minister of State at her Department holds in relation to emigration.

The Department of Education do not have responsibility for the provision of information or financial assistance for intending emigrants, nor does the Minister of State at the Department hold specific responsibilities in relation to this matter.

The Department of Labour have responsibility for giving general advice to intending emigrants. The Department of Foreign Affairs have responsibility for looking after the needs of people once they have emigrated.

However, at the request of the Taoiseach, the Minister of State visited the United States between 10 and 17 January 1988, to report on the difficulties being experienced by undocumented Irish emigrants as a result of the implementation of the Immigration Reform and Control Bill, 1986.

The Deputy will also be aware that Deputy Fahey has special responsibility for Youth Affairs in the Department and for this reason has familiarised himself with the emigration issue as it affects young people.
