Vol. 377 No. 8

Written Answers. - GAA Funding.

118.

asked the Minister for Education if it is intended to allocate funds for capital purposes to the GAA from the national lottery; whether her Department has received a specific request for such funding; the likely amount of grant, if any, involved; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A total of £4 million has been provided from the national lottery surplus for the capital grant scheme for the provision of recreational facilities operated by my Department. The scheme is open to all voluntary bodies and is designed to assist and encourage local initiatives in the provision of youth, sport and community facilities throughout the country.

GAA clubs throughout the country are eligible to apply under the scheme. Before the availability of a grant can be considered for any project, however, it is necessary for formal applications to be submitted to my Department for consideration under the terms of the scheme. Formal application forms and conditions of the scheme may be obtained from my Department's Youth Affairs Section, 11th Floor, Hawkins House.

A number of individual GAA clubs have already submitted applications and these are currently receiving consideration within my Department.
