Vol. 377 No. 9

Written Answers. - Contributions to Marine Services.

136.

asked the Minister for the Marine whether any foreign Government contributes financially, or has ever so contributed, directly or indirectly, to the lighthouse, lightship, coastguard or lifeboat services maintained around the coasts of the State; if so, the proportions in relation to the contribution made by this State; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

No foreign Government have ever contributed financially, directly or indirectly, to the lighthouse, lightship, coastguard or lifeboat services maintained around the coasts of the State. The cost of providing lighthouses and lightships is met from light dues paid by ships entering Irish and British ports plus a contribution from the Exchequer. The cost of the Coast Life Saving Service is met from the Exchequer and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is funded by voluntary contributions including an annual contribution from the Exchequer.
